2006 TALP ANNUAL MEETING
Can you
believe the 2006 Annual Meeting is less than two months away! The Lubbock
chapter is busy getting everything ready for your arrival in our town. We
have some excellent seminar speakers on bankruptcy, criminal law, ethics,
real estate, adoption and judicial bypass, jury selection, and legislative
update. Also, there will be an opportunity for leadership training for
those who want to “step up to the plate.” The vendors will be available for
your learning and shopping pleasure both Friday and Saturday. If you get
too tired, you might consider having a 5-minute neck and/or shoulder
massage.
We have
planned a night on the town at the Cactus Theater in the Depot District in
the heart of Lubbock. This will be a 50s Nostalgia Night. Some of us may
not want to admit we remember any of those oldies but the look on our faces
just might give us away! We may be able to have a hamburger and an ice
cream sundae before we catch the bus, too.
Saturday night
will be a night of celebration as we honor those who have served us and
those who will serve us in the coming year. New York, New York will be our
banquet theme, and we would love to see your red, black and white attire,
especially in the Lady Raider Nation region of Texas.
We hope you
come to learn, be entertained, network, and have lots of fun!
Crossing the Line
A special opportunity has
become available for Texas ALP members. Mandy Mantooth, Director of Human
Resources for Lubbock County, has volunteered to attend our Sunday Breakfast
to talk very briefly about recognizing the factors which contribute to
personality conflicts within an office environment and show a video entitled
"Crossing the Line". Mandy showed this video to the staff of the District
Clerk’s Office in Lubbock and many personality conflicts disappeared
immediately, and members of the staff thanked me for showing it. The
information will not only help TALP members in their work environment, but
the principles will also spill over into our communications within chapters
and at the state level. This presentation will be done during the breakfast,
so everyone will need to be on time, and you will be able to leave by 9:30.

From Your Parliamentarian:
oting
versus Consensus. Voting makes sense when
■ Many people are involved;
■ The group is diverse;
■ Moving forward is more important than
settlement;
■ Before votes are cast there is ample
time for dialogue; and
■ The dialogue includes looking at and
evaluating a number of options.
The disadvantage of voting is that it leads to a win/lose
outcome. What happens to those who voted “no”? Will they support the
outcome of the vote? Were the concerns of those who voted “no” addressed?
Consensus is certainly more desirable. Consensus is the agreement
that is acceptable enough so that all members agree to support the
decision. Each and every person involved in the decision-making process has
veto power.
If one person objects, we should find out why and give
considerable thought to the concerns expressed by the dissenting member.
People rarely use veto power.
Consensus does not mean there is no conflict. Consensus requires
taking all concerns into consideration and attempting to find the most
acceptable decision possible.
Consensus decisions demonstrate
■ Commitment to the belief that the
group needs have priority over individual needs;
■ Participation and equal access to
power;
■ Recognition that process is as
important as outcome;
■ Attitudes of cooperation, support,
trust, respect, and good communication;
■ Tolerance of differences and
acceptance of conflicting views; and
■ Time, willingness, and capability to
devote time to the process.
Some factors against consensus include
■ Competition;
■ Individualism; and
■ Passivity.
