What Types of Certification are Available?
The Texas Institute for Specialty
Certification offers two specialty exams that are specific to
Texas
law; the Civil Litigation exam, and the new Real Estate exam. The Real
Estate exam will be given for the first time in September 2005. These two
exams are administered each year in the spring and fall.
The exam outlines can be found at
http://www.texasalp.org/specialty.htm.
In addition to the two Texas Specialty
exams, NALS offers three certification exams.
The first is the ALS. This is the basic
certification exam for legal professionals. To gain this certification you
must pass a four hour, three part exam. The exam is offered the first
Saturday in March; the first Saturday in June (for those who have completed
the Basic or Advanced NALS Legal Training Course); in July during the
regional conferences; the last Saturday in September and the first Saturday
in December (for those who have completed the Basic or Advanced NALS Legal
Training Course). This is a great certification exam to start with.
The PLS is a more advanced certification
available to the legal professional. To receive this certification you must
pass a one day, four part exam. This exam is offered the first Saturday in
March; in conjunction with the regional conferences held in July; and the
last Saturday in September.
NALS also offers the Professional
Paralegal or PP certification. This is a four part, one day exam. This
exam is offered the first Saturday in March; in conjunction with the
regional conferences held in July; and the last Saturday in September.
Texas ALP Certification Committee will
be sponsoring a cram session at the Winter Board Meeting in February 2006 in
Austin. This cram session will be geared toward the PP certification and
PLS certification exams. If you are planning to take either of these exams
in March, this would be a great way to get in some last minute studying.
The Docket Quiz is now online. Please
check the website.

Thoughts
on Membership
Submitted by: Pat Phelps, PLS
2005-06 Membership Committee
How do
you feel when you see those advertisements on television for special offers
ONLY for new subscribers? Does the thought cross your mind, “what do they
do for those of us who have been loyal for the long-term?” Perhaps our
long-term members get that feeling when we are so busy concentrating on
attracting new members that we seem to forget them. These “long-termers”
are the very people we look to for chairing committees, running for office,
and especially for mentoring our new members.
So,
let’s think about showing our appreciation for all their hard work and
loyalty. Consider talking with a local hotel to provide the space, and a
vendor (or two, or more) to provide munchies and beverages. Get some
tickets and some items for door prizes—they don’t have to cost much—everyone
likes getting something free!
Concentrate on having current officers and past presidents mingling and
making a point of talking to everyone. Seek their opinions on current
activities, things they would like the association to do to attract their
attendance, as well as things being done that do not appeal. Set up
marketing booths with information on your local chapter, your state, and the
national association activities and upcoming events. Bring them in and make
them a part of whatever is going on. Everyone likes to feel needed—don’t
you?

Dues Increase
At
the Winter Board Meeting in Laredo last February, the members voted to
increase state dues to $15 as of May 1, 2005. Please keep this in mind when
you send in your renewal dues to NALS and when you are talking with
prospective members.
