FINANCE COMMITTEE

The “Anything Goes” Raffle at the Fall Board Meeting was a huge success!  On behalf of the Finance Committee, many thanks to all of you who donated raffle items and bought tickets.  Special thanks also go to Esquire Deposition Services, who donated the materials used to print the raffle tickets.

We will have another non-dues fund raiser at the 2007 Winter Board Meeting.  For a nominal fee of $5, members attending the Winter Board Meeting may wear denim on “Denim Day” on Saturday, February 17, 2007.  Details will be provided prior to the meeting.

On a personal note, the Committee offers its deep and heartfelt appreciation to two of our members who took over finance and raffle duties on the Committee’s behalf at the Fall Board Meeting in Richardson, Texas.  A huge thank-you goes out to Helene L. Wood, PP, PLS, and Rita C. Alesi, PP, PLS, TSC, for their cheerful hard work and willingness to help out!

Are You a Leader, or Do You Just Lead?

Having served on a few state committees, it seems to me that being a leader takes a great deal of skill.  How do you know when to delegate a project or just do it yourself?  Since the committees are made up of members across the state, great organizational skills are required to ensure a successful committee leader.  However, I don’t think the chairmen realize that while they do have committee members, they are not being utilized to their potential.  Some do, some don’t.  Could it be the chair is not confident with the committee members?  Perhaps they aren’t familiar with a particular member’s skills or capabilities.  Maybe the member isn’t confident enough to speak up, or doesn’t participate enough, or doesn’t follow through when asked.    How do we fix this?  Communication.  I think communication is the most important characteristic of a successful committee.

It takes a team to be successful and if each person on the team does their part, no problem, right?  Not necessarily.  Even if you do your part, you still have to communicate or wires may get crossed and tasks could end up duplicated.  Chairmen need to make sure everyone knows what’s going on, and members need to make sure and ask questions and know what is expected.  If you’re going to be “involved,” then be involved 100 percent.

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

MARKETING TIPS – Submitted by Helene L. Wood, PP, PLS

Are you serious about promoting your association?  Do you have a plan?  Can you handle success?  If yes is your answer to those questions, then you will succeed.

If your answer to the second question was no, then get one.  We all know that we need a plan if we want to get anywhere.  What kind of house would you build without a plan?  How about that bicycle?  Even it has a plan to put it together.  The first thing to coming up with a plan is figuring out the specifics of what you want to accomplish.  Once that is done, decide on the steps to accomplish the what.  Now that you have the basics, go to the NALS Web site and print out the Marketing Tool Kit.  The chapter Blueprints will give you more information on making a plan for promoting your association.

Here are a few easy marketing projects from the Tool Kit:

*        Give the guests at a meeting a copy of your publication.  If you have their mailing address, send them an additional two months of publications with a short note encouraging them to attend another meeting and/or join.

*        Send a “thank you for coming” note to nonmembers who attend a meeting.

*           Ask a law firm administrator to be a guest speaker at one of your meetings or just Invite them to attend a meeting as a guest of your chapter.  If you have the funds to pay for their lunch/dinner, it would be a good idea to offer them a one-time only free lunch/dinner.

Give a Little – Get a Lot in Return!

Cheryl Moseley PLS, CP, TSC
President-elect

Are you an active member, the kind that would be missed, or are you just content that your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock, or do you meet in private and criticize and knock?

Do you take an active part to help the work along, or are you satisfied to be the kind who just belongs?

Do you work on committees – to this there is no trick – or leave the work to just a few and talk about the clique?

Come to the meetings often and help with hand and heart – don't just be a member but take an active part.

Think it over members and know what is right from wrong.  Are you an active member, or DO YOU JUST BELONG?

(copied w/permission from NALS e-News)

So, fellow members – where do you fit in on the 2007-2008 Leadership Team?  If you can't commit to chairing a committee, please step up and serve as a committee member.  Planning for next year is quite a task because I know there are many members who cannot make it to Texas ALP meetings, but would like to help on a committee.   I am trying to get some new committee members involved, so that our “tried and true” members can relax, rejuvenate, and refresh themselves.  Unfortunately, responses from members willing to help on committees have been less than overwhelming.

None of us like to experience burnout, and we are all stressed and busy, but we still should all be working for our association.  With that said, are you ready to step out of your comfort zone and give back to our association?  If so, please email me at cmoseley@qsclpc.com and let me know of your interests.  The list of committees is located on the Texas ALP website – www.texasalp.org.  I would love to answer any questions you have about any of the TALP committees.  As always, I'm just waiting to hear from you.  :)  ~~ Cheryl

YOU HAVE QUESTIONS?  WE HAVE ANSWERS!

Are you interested in running for office or being a chairman but want a better idea of what would be expected before you make the commitment?  The Leadership Committee is going to give you an opportunity at the Winter Board Meeting.  You may “shadow” an officer or chairman for the weekend (exclusive of Executive Committee meetings).   The officer positions you may shadow are recording secretary, vice president, or president-elect.  The chairman shadowing will include leadership, marketing, education, certification, finance, and credentials.  If there is more than one member interested in the same position, a random drawing will be held.  Contact Stephanie Burns at sburns@gibbs-bruns.com.

Take advantage of this opportunity and see what really goes on behind the scenes to make Texas ALP the grand association that it is!
